Tooting’s Age Activity Centre for older adults to hold open day for Wandsworth residents

On Friday 6th September 2019, the Age Activity Centre, run by London charity Hestia and based in Tooting, Wandsworth, will host an open day to welcome prospective members and individuals interested in the service.

The day centre, which opens its doors four times a week, provides a space for members of the community aged 60 years and above to come together and enjoy a wide range of activities, events and adult learning classes.

The activities enable older members of the community to combat loneliness through socialisation and work to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. With activities ranging from tai chi and dance to choir, lunch club, and bingo, all members are able to find something that suits their interests and abilities. Wandsworth Council Life Long Learning Classes also run at the centre, equipping older people with invaluable life skills including how to do yoga and how to use a computer and a mobile phone.

The open day will run from 10:30am through to 4pm, taking place at the Age Activity Centre at 966 Garratt Lane, approximately a five-minute walk from Tooting Broadway tube station.

The day will give residents of the borough the opportunity to learn more about and try taster sessions of some of the activities held by the Age Activity Centre. Individuals will also be invited to sign up to the Wandsworth Council Lifelong Learning Classes, which run in six-week blocks at the centre.

Maria*, who has recently taken part in an IT for beginners class at the Age Activity Centre, said:

“I have learnt a lot since joining the class. I’ve been supported to set up an email address and learnt how to book a GP appointment and doing shopping online. The tutor is very patient, and we all get to have fun together too.”
