What is The Big Give?

The Big Give is the UK’s leading match funding platform, helping charities to increase their impact and support more people.

What is Hestia raising money for?

We are hoping to raise £25,000 to support the crucial work of our Children and Family Workers, who provide essential therapeutic support and fun, bond-building activities for mums and their children throughout their time in our domestic abuse refuges.

Your support will help to provide:

• Therapeutic sessions such as art therapy to help children to settle into their new environment and begin to recover from the trauma they’ve endured
  
  
• Fun activities over the Christmas period and throughout 2023, providing an opportunity for children to just be children again. These activities will include play sessions, cooking sessions, mum and baby groups and homework clubs, as well as day trips out. These activities help mums and their children to make new memories and rebuild their relationship

We know this support is vital: three-quarters of the children we support have been negatively affected by their experience of domestic abuse. However, almost all children reported feeling safe and happy in a refuge, while two-thirds of mothers say their relationships with their children have improved.

Why does Hestia need support right now?

The cost-of-living crisis is having a profound impact on women and children experiencing domestic abuse. While the vast majority of women say the crisis is making the abuse they experience worse, many also feel unable to leave the abusive relationship. At the same time, Hestia has seen a 30% increase in demand for our refuge spaces this year, and the cost of a family moving out of our refuges has increased by more than £5,000.

Despite these increasing challenges, Hestia is determined to continue supporting as many families as possible. We want to ensure that those who do arrive at our refuges receive the best possible chance of overcoming their trauma and moving forward in their lives.
