  • The Best Songs To Help You Celebrate Pride in London

The Best Songs To Help You Celebrate Pride in London

Marcus Wratten

In the spirit of Pride in London, which takes place on Saturday 7th July 2018, we asked some of our staff, service users and volunteers about their favourite songs to get them in the mood for Pride.
Drum roll! Here are the top eight and their testaments:

8. Cher, Believe
“It’s just got such a care-free, optimistic sound to it. Plus, everyone knows the words, so it’s always good for a sing-a-long!”

7. Ultra Naté, Free

“For me, it embodies everything Pride is about. Celebrating the freedom to be who you want to be.”

6. ABBA, Dancing Queen

“It’s a classic! It soundtracked my teen years, and taught me to let my hair down and have fun.”

5. Lady Gaga, Born This Way

“I think Lady Gaga is a pioneer for the current generation of LGBTQ kids, which is fantastic. I like the political statement behind the song too - I think that’s why Pride is about.”

4. Diana Ross, I’m Coming Out
“I mean, the title alone! I just love the sense of liberation when you listen to that song.”

3. George Michael, Freedom!
"George was and always will be a gay icon, and this song is just one of the reasons why. For a lot of people, it's a song that represents exactly what it says on the tin - freedom."

2. Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
“Its been a soundtrack to the LGBT movement for decades, I think. The lyrics are quite powerful too when you really listen to them.”

1. Madonna - Express Yourself
“Madonna is an undisputed LGBT icon. What a woman. Express Yourself is all about living your life as your true, authentic self, and for me, that’s what Pride is about.”

Agree or disagree? What's your favourite song to get you in the mood for Pride celebrations?
Hestia will be attending Pride in London on Saturday 8th July 2018, standing with our LGTBQ+ staff, volunteers and service users, and celebrating equality and inclusion.
See you there!
