Vin's story

Hello, hi, I am Vin and I have been working with Hestia for 2 and a half years, currently as a Team Manager for the Harrow Cove.

I had come straight out of university with a Psychology BSc degree when I started at Hestia Cove (a mental health crisis service), as a peer support worker and then a recovery worker. It was my first job working in mental health and I didn’t know what to expect as I had never worked in this setting before.

I remember my first day at the Cove - I was quite anxious, especially as it was during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. This changed when I met my wonderful colleagues, who were very welcoming, and we got to learn from each other, even to this day.

Hestia’s learning opportunities also helped me to expand my knowledge on many areas, such as working with individuals with personality disorders. It has been a pleasant experience using what I had learned as well as my own lived experiences to empower and support individuals who are in crisis. At the Coves, we never know what to expect as each day is different – I think the unpredictability can be stimulating.

Thanks to the opportunities to progress within Hestia, I am now the team manager for the Harrow Cove. As I have been here since the start of the Coves, it has been interesting to see how the service has changed and evolved to suit the needs of our service users.

What I enjoy most about my role, is my team, who are such a joy to work with. We always learn and can rely on each other. I do miss contact with the service users, so I try to engage with them in some way, such as running the weekly Arts and Crafts Group and taking drop-in sessions.

Though some days can be hectic, it has been manageable thanks to the staff who do an amazing job at keeping on top of things and sticking to the Hestia values.

“What excites me about joining Hestia is the organisation’s genuine commitment towards creating a more equitable, diverse and inclusive organisation. I appreciate their dedication towards wanting to build an inclusive culture, courage to challenge themselves and admit more needs to be done and willingness to work in collaboration with staff, volunteers, and service users to identify, understand and address inequities. So, their people feel respected and more able to bring their authentic and full selves to work, free of discrimination and barriers”.
