Hestia celebrates Black History Month this October

This October, Hestia’s staff, service users and volunteers will celebrate Black History Month.

Black History Month is recognised annually in October across the UK and worldwide. The month provides us with an opportunity to collectively remember and celebrate notable people and mark events in the history of the African diaspora.

Members of Hestia’s staff teams and volunteers have come together to share what Black History Month means to them, and have co-produced a calendar of digital events and resources to share and stories to tell.

Every week through October, we’ll be sharing learning opportunities with our teams, exploring the contributions made by Black people to British culture and life, discussing Black history including Carnival, the Windrush generation through to Black Lives Matter, and sharing materials for further learning. This will include books, podcasts, and external events and talks to attend.

Hestia will also launch the ‘I Am’ video series, featuring members of our staff teams as they share what being Black means to them, and the importance of recognising and celebrating Black History Month.

To mark World Mental Health Day (10th October), Hestia will be joined by the Black Thrive, a Lambeth-based partnership between communities, statutory organisations and the voluntary and private sector. The partnership works to tackle barriers and injustices that affect the mental health and well-being of Black people, and the inequalities experienced by Black people in mental health services.

Black Thrive will host Zoom workshops, on 14th and 22nd October.

The people we support will also be taking part in local activities across our services, celebrating different cultures and the Black people who make Britain the country it is today.
