On 22 February 2019, the Home Office announced that Sara Thornton will take on the role of Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner, following on from Kevin Hyland's departure from the role in May 2018.

The role of the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner is a critical part of the UK’s response to modern slavery. We hope that Sara Thornton will not only continue to drive change in policing, but will put at the heart of her work an understanding of the needs and experiences of the men, women and children who have survived this brutal crime. As one of the leading organisations working with survivors in the UK, we look forward to working alongside her to achieve this.

Ms Thornton is currently Chair of the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) with 30 years of policing experience, and will take up her new role in combating modern slavery from May.
