Hestia’s Everyone’s Business IDVA team awarded Met Police Public Protection Award

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) has awarded Hestia’s Everyone Business IDVA team with a Public Protection Award for its work in supporting police employees experiencing domestic abuse.

Hestia and the MPS have been working in partnership since 2018 to develop a sustainable programme of change for staff within the MPS who may be experiencing domestic abuse, including introducing an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA).

More than 75 members of MPS staff have been supported through the Everyone’s Business programme.

The Everyone’s Business IDVA team worked to understand the unique circumstances of being a police employee while experiencing domestic abuse and aims to empower employees to reach out for confidential, face to face advocacy and support. The service also provides a resource for line managers seeking advice on how best to support colleagues.

The MPS is pioneering how police forces respond to domestic abuse when it affects their staff. They are also providing leadership to other forces – speaking at events and sharing their experiences and learning. Their peer-leadership will undoubtedly lead to a tide-change in all forces.

In 2020, the MPS became one of the first organisations to be awarded Hestia’s Everyone’s Business Award, recognising employers that are proactively supporting employees experiencing domestic abuse.

The prestigious Public Protection Award was given jointly to the Everyone’s Business IDVA team and Detective Constable Viran Wiltshire, who have been working together to make the programme a success.

Viran and the team have demonstrated outstanding passion and determination with an aim to bring positive change within the MPS and the team is so pleased to have received this award.
