Hestia's Modern Slavery Response service

Hestia is the largest provider of modern slavery support in London and the south east.

What is modern slavery?

Modern slavery is a serious crime in which people are coerced or deceived into a situation where they are exploited, for the purpose of making a profit. The offence is punishable by up to life imprisonment under the 2015 Modern Slavery Act.

Modern slavery takes many forms including trafficking for sexual exploitation (including prostitution, strip clubs, escort work and pornography), domestic servitude (including working as cleaners, carers or nannies) and forced labour in work such as nail bars and car washes.

Safe houses and advocacy

Hestia’s modern slavery service started in 2011 and we have supported more than 6,000 victims since then. We provide nine safe houses in London and Kent, as well as a pan-London outreach service working in every London borough.

In 2022 we supported over 2,400 adults and dependent children affected by modern slavery.

We work closely with The Salvation Army to deliver support to victims who have been referred into the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). The NRM is a national framework that ensures victims of modern slavery are identified and receive appropriate support.

"The Government cannot tackle this problem alone which is why the work of organisations such as Hestia is vital. We are very grateful for your commitment and dedication to those who have been exploited." - Former Prime Minister Theresa May

Modern Slavery Innovation Team

Hestia’s Modern Slavery Innovation Team is a hub of evidence-based support services which complement the needs of the survivors we support in the National Referral Mechanism (NRM). Our award-winning Phoenix Project used to sit in this team. This year, the team’s focus is on three added value projects: a Child & Family support project, Community Integration & Volunteering, and Employability.

The Modern Slavery Innovation Team also focuses on raising awareness about modern slavery, and empowering survivor voice in doing so. Our Innovation team is the home of our flagship Art is Freedom & Underground Lives Research

We also deliver Modern Slavery Awareness training to external companies – click the link below to find out more about how we can help your organisation strengthen your understanding of modern slavery, and how you can help!
