Beena Chadha: Senior Engagement Worker (HCMHRS ) & LGBTQ Network Group Member
I originally joined Hestia as a volunteer. During my Psychology degree someone mentioned Hestia. As it was an organisation I had not heard about before then, I decided to start as a volunteer rather than a paid job in case I wouldn’t like it.
I initially started volunteering 1 day a week but after 7 months I realised that this is something I wanted to go into long term.
Although my role is largely office based, I do have a case load of clients and I enjoy networking with people, especially volunteers. I meet volunteers in all kinds of places, from going out to universities, to starting a conversation at a bank or when I go out and buy my lunch. It is great giving people an insight into the amazing work Hestia does.
Hestia is not a very prescriptive environment. Where other organisations can be quite ridged, at Hestia you manage your own time and management gives you the freedom to do that and let you work autonomously.
It is a amazing time to join Hestia. From the UKSAYNOMORE campaigns which raises our profile to the Hestia Approach where we move to a person centred and recovery approach.
Equality and Diversity plays a big part in Hestia. I am part of the LGBTQ network group and through these focus groups, we are able to change and improve situation for staff, volunteers and service users alike, whether they identify as LGBTQ or have an interest and want to help our cause.
The fact I was able to develop from a volunteer to a Deputy Manager in a short space of times shows how much you can progress if you want to. Hestia offers a wealth of training to their staff and through our pool worker list can try out a different service to see if it is something you may be interested in before potentially moving across in a permanent way.
Through my time at Hestia I have had exposure to a wide range of our services, from domestic abuse, mental health, substance misuse, ex-offenders and young people. Hestia very much feels like a family and senior management are incredibly approachable and friendly and our CEO knows many people by name, not only staff but volunteers as well.
Through Hestia I have been able to find something I truly enjoy.
